Rumour Mongering: Daniel Sturridge to Join Tottenham Hotspur

File this one under transfer rumours we never saw coming.

Daniel Sturridge to Tottenham? It seems odd and unlikely, but then odd and unlikely is nothing new in the land of rumour mongering. Still, if you’d asked a hundred people yesterday where the striker might end up next year, it’s likely none would have said Spurs.

That’s the story today, though, thanks first it would appear to The Mirror and since reproduced far and wide, with the claim being a two-year contract is on offer and that the player will now choose between a return to London or a move to MLS for next season.

If Sturridge were to decide to stay in England and join Spurs, he would be replacing Fernando Llorente as Harry Kane’s back-up for the 2019-20 season, with the 33-year-old Spaniard’s contract also expiring this summer and no sign Spurs will look to extend his stay.

For Sturridge, it would seem a lateral move, trading a back-up job at Liverpool for a back-up job with Tottenham, though at least at Spurs it would be expected that the 29-year-old former England international would be solidly second on the team’s depth chart.

By contrast, at Liverpool it’s hard to tell which of Sturridge or Divock Origi are higher up the pecking order—and both might be behind wingers Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, and even Xherdan Shaqiri as options to lead the line in the absence of Roberto Firmino.

At Spurs, at least, he would be the clear second choice. And, as likely as the move would have seemed yesterday, he would get to stay in England and in the Premier League for at least another season or two, and with a club near the top of the table to boot.
