Andy Robertson Talks About Family Bonds

The defender talks about his older brother and the sacrifices he made in the name of Andy’s career.

Andy Robertson’s inspirational life story is well-trod ground at this point. He worked his way up from nearly giving on football to being the starting left-back for the best football club on Earth.

In an interview with the official site, Robertson talks about the role his family played in his huge rise — especially his older brother, Stephen, who Robertson admitted was the better player growing up.

“He didn’t move much, he was a bit of a static striker but scored a lot of goals,” Robertson laughed.

“Now I’m not sure he can hack it! I spoke to him recently and for the first time ever he gave me a small compliment. He said: ‘I don’t know how you do it because I’ve played five-a-side twice this week and my body is in bits.’ He’s 27. I took that as a small compliment.”

The friendly sibling ribbing aside, Robertson acknowledged the sacrifices his brother made growing up to help his career.

“Everyone focuses on sacrifices – he had to make a lot for me to get where I am,” he said.

“I’m sure it would have been tough for him at times, if my mum and dad were going to watch me wherever it was in the country and he was left with my auntie and uncle, or on his own when he was old enough.

“But they were sacrifices he was willing to make and when you look at it, fair play to him because he could have dug his heels in. He was happy. I went to support him and he went to support me as much as we could. That’s the relationship we had and we still have.

“Last summer, l watched him graduate from university and we had a good day out. He comes to games. It’s a bit different in terms of supporting but I’m sure it was just as important for him for me to be there at his graduation as it is for me that he’s at games.”

Andy Robertson seems like a good egg, and it’s clear that he came from a good family. With any luck, by the end of this season, the Robertson brothers will have another big milestone to celebrate together.
