Fabinho Turns Focus From Winning Minutes to Winning the Title
Having secured his place in the first team, Fabinho wants to tap into his experiences with Monaco to help the Reds.
After a slow start as he adjusted to the faster and more physical pace of the Premier League and the particular demands of playing for a manager like Jürgen Klopp, midfielder Fabinho has become increasingly key to Liverpool’s play.
The 25-year-old’s dynamic play at the base of midfield has added fluidity to the team’s transition play and helped to bolster a defence dealing with multiple injuries, and it’s to the point it’s difficult to imagine a best eleven without him in it.
“I still have things to improve but I am happy overall with my performances,” Fabinho told The Telegraph. “I’m up to the speed of the Premier League and that was what I was looking for. I had patience to wait for my opportunities.”
Waiting isn’t always easy, especially for a player in the prime of his career who arrived after having being a nailed-on starter for Monaco, but to his credit Fabinho did just that, working hard on the training pitch until his chance came.
When he did, he took it. Now, he wants to use the experience he gained from Monaco’s league title in 2016-17, when they beat Paris Saint-Germain to the top of Ligue 1, to help guide Liverpool to their own piece of league history.
“I know it is really hard to win a league, especially the Premier League,” he noted. “But we have experienced players here at Liverpool. We know we are at the top of the table and it is important to be there at this point in the league.
“But we cannot think just about the title every time because that can put extra pressure on us. Enjoy the games, go on the pitch with happiness, and go game-by-game.”
