Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Join Luka Jovic Race
Reports in Germany have Liverpool working to beat Real Madrid to the 21-year-old Serbian striker.
Jürgen Klopp is known to be averse to change for change’s sake and for wanting to ensure that there are enough minutes to go around for all of his key players, meaning that with the side he’s now built at Liverpool it would be silly to expect major moves this summer.
Particularly if this squad manage to win one of the two major trophies they’re still in the hunt for, given the age and quality of the current group, any changes will be minimal. But minimal doesn’t mean no change, and most do expect at least one big signing this summer.
Most expect a forward to be brought in to compliment the trio of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, and Sadio Mané. So far, the name mentioned most often has been Timo Werner of Red Bull Leipzig. Today, though, there’s a new name to add to the mix: Luka Jovic.
According to Bild, Real Madrid—who are rumoured to have already offered £39M to sign him—could have themselves some serious competition for the 21-year-old Serbian international who’s currently plying his trade at Eintracht Frankfurt on loan from Benfica.
Two years ago, Frankfurt signed Jovic on a two-year loan with a €7M option on the striker who has drawn comparisons to Radamel Falcao. They intend to trigger the option at the end of the season. Then, the belief in Germany is that he will be immediately sold on.
In addition to the Real Madrid rumblings, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Jovic in recent months. Liverpool, though, are said to have been working behind the scenes to convince the player and his agent to pick Anfield.
This season in the Bundesliga, Jovic has scored 14 goals and four assists in 19 appearances. He has a further five goals in six Europa League games. While most comfortable as a central forward, Jovic has enough pace and skill on the ball to play anywhere in attack.
