Liverpool FC vs FC Bayern Munich: Facts & Stats

The Reds play hosts to Die Roten in their Champions League Round of 16 first leg clash on Tuesday

Another epic European night under the Anfield lights is on the horizon as Liverpool take on Jürgen Klopp’s longtime foe, the most successful club in German football history, FC Bayern Munich. Liverpool and Munich each have five European titles, with Liverpool having won their last trophy in 2005 and Munich in 2013 (defeating Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund in the final).

Most recently both Red teams have experienced disappointment in the UEFA Champions League with Munich having lost in the last four out of five semi-finals which includes last season’s defeat by Real Madrid. Liverpool reached the last of 16 and went on to reach the UCL final last season, both for the first time in nine years.

Previous Meetings

Despite both clubs’ illustrious history on the European stage, this Tuesday’s match will only be their sixth meeting.

Bayern were victorious in the first and second match, both taking place as part of the 1971/72 European Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finals. Both Liverpool and Bayern had failed to produce a goal at Anfield and the German side went on to win 3 – 1 in the Munich return with Gerd Müller scoring twice and Uli Hoeness once.

Liverpool were victorious against Bayern in the semi-finals of the 1980/81 European Cup campaign. After another goalless first leg at Anfield, Ray Kennedy sent Liverpool into the final when he found goal in the 83rd minute with the Reds going on to win the match on away goals as Bayern’s Karl-Heinz Rummenigge equalized five minutes later.

The sides’ final meeting took place in the 2001 UEFA Super Cup at Monaco’s Stade Louis II with Liverpool winning the Super Cup 3 – 2.

Having won five and drawn one without conceding a goal, the Reds are unbeaten in their last six round of 16 matches.

Their most recent fixtures against Bundesliga opposition took place against TSG Hoffenheim last season in the playoffs and Liverpool went on to win both the away (2 – 1) and home (4 – 2) legs bringing their record in two-legged ties against German clubs to 14 wins and two losses. Since their 4-3 aggregate defeat against Bayer Leverkusen in the 2001/02 quarter-finals, Liverpool have won the last four.

Liverpool have won their last five home UEFA Champions League fixtures, beating Paris Saint-Germain (3-2), Crvena zvezda (4-0), and Napoli (1-0) in this season’s group stage and they are unbeaten in 19 European home matches, having won 14 and drawn five since losing 3-0 loss to Real Madrid in October 2014.

Liverpool have lost five of their last eight European matches with all those defeats coming outside of England.

Bayern Munich

Bayern have a record of 11 wins and three losses in the round of 16.

This time last season, Bayern beat Beşiktaş 5-0 at home and 3-1 away, making it five successive victories in the round of 16 matches, having a scored an incredible 31 goals in their last seven. That winning run includes their 5-1 victories both home and away against Arsenal in the 2016/17 round of 16. Bayern have not played another English side since the Gunners.

Bayern were crowned Champions of Germany for a record 28th time last season, with a landmark sixth successive Bundesliga title and have reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals or better in each of the last seven seasons. Bayern’s campaign was ended by Real Madrid in 2017/18 for the second year in a row.

Bayern are unbeaten in their last eight European away games, winning six and drawing two and have scored at least two goals in every one. Their first clean sheet in their UCL travels in 15 matches came against Benfica.

Jürgen Klopp was in charge of the Borussia Dortmund side beaten by Bayern at Wembley in the 2013 UEFA Champions League final.Dortmund had overcome Bayern by beating them 5-2 in the 2012 German Cup final with Robert Lewandowski scoring a hat-trick. Dortmund also won the Bundesliga title that same season, their second successive league championship and also beat Bayern in the German Super Cup in 2008, 2013 and 2014.

Klopp’s record against Bayern while in charge of Mainz (2001–08) and Dortmund (2008–15) was W9 D4 L10.

Xherdan Shaqiri was a Bayern player from July 2012 until January 2015 scoring 11 goals in 52 Bundesliga appearances. He won two league and cup doubles in Munich and was an unused substitute in the side’s 2013 UEFA Champions League final victory but did convert the decisive penalty in their UEFA Super Cup shoot-out triumph over Chelsea that same year. He was also in the side that won the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup.
