Liverpool Sought to Prove They’re “in It for the Long Run” Against Watford

With a 5-0 victory in the books, it’s fair to say they did just that.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has already had some memorable performances in his young Liverpool career, but his three-assist showing against Watford on Wednesday night might just be the best of the bunch for the 20-year-old fullback.

His three helpers are the headline, but even that doesn’t really sum up just how well he played, how many dangerous crosses played to teammates, and how much hard running he put in from start to finish to dominate that right flank.

“Obviously it’s every full-back’s dream to provide assists and to get three is probably not something I’ll get the privilege of saying too often,” he said after the match. “But I’m happy to be able to provide the team with chances to score.

“Credit to the lads for taking them, especially Virg with his two goals. We had a bit more of an aerial threat with Sadio being so good in the air and Divock coming into the team, so it was important for us to give them service and that’s what we did.”

It was hardly a bad night for fellow fullback Andy Robertson on the left, with the Scot providing the assist for Virgil van Dijk’s second after Alexander-Arnold had put the ball in for his first, but it was clear who was the star of the night.

There won’t be much time to linger on it, though, not with just ten games left in the 2018-19 season and Everton up on the weekend, and it will take more performances like Wednesday to keep Liverpool ahead of Manchester City in the title race.

“It was important to come out and show the fans that we’re in it for the long run,” Alexander-Arnold added. “We want to give a good account of ourselves in the last games of the season, have a good run-in, and give ourselves the best chance.

“We went out there today and we really enjoyed it. It was important for us to obviously put the results of the last few weeks behind us and go out there today and put in a really solid performance, and that’s what we did.”
