Andy Robertson: “It’s a Bit Fortunate but We Fought Right Until the End”
Liverpool’s left back on the Reds’ last minute grasp which led to their win against Spurs on Sunday
Liverpool’s late Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday marked the third time this season that Jürgen Klopp’s men managed to clinch a victory in the 90th minute. Aside from the fact that they have managed this feat more than any other PL side this season, yesterday’s match was also arguably the toughest fixture left on their run-in.
Thanks to yesterday’s late goal which saw the match finish 2 - 1 to the Reds, Liverpool now sit atop the PL table with six more games to play before season’s end and lead Manchester City by two points; although City do have a game in hand.
Andy Robertson had an outstanding game on Sunday, which is nothing new. The full-back is relentless in his performance week in, week out and yesterday was no exception. The Scotsman had 88 touches on the ball and an absolutely sublime assist to Roberto Firmino’s stunning headed goal in the first half which marked his eighth assist of the season. Though Spurs were the stronger side for most of the second half, Liverpool had more grit and as Andy - who was yesterday’s Man of the Match - admitted; luck was most definitely on their side. He also felt that their win was a testament to the indomitable spirit of the entire team and therefore Toby Alderweireld’s eventual own goal had not been a fluke. Andy spoke with Sky Sports yesterday and shared his thoughts on what was a nerve-wracking game for the majority of the Liverpool collective support base for almost 90 minutes and this is what he had to say:
Whether it’s us or Man City who win the league, we’ll look back and there’ll be crucial goals and crucial wins. This will be one of them for us because it was so late on against a very good team; you think it’s going to end in a draw or even they’re going to win it, because they’re pushing forward as well. To win it, I’m sure we’ll look back and it’ll be a good three points for us. In the first half an hour, I thought we blew them away if I’m honest. We played really well, without getting the second goal we needed. Then we got a bit sloppy and you can’t do that against a good team like that; to be fair to them, they beat us comfortably in the second half.
But these lads go right to the end, another late winner – yes, it’s a bit fortunate but we fought right until the end. It wasn’t the best second half for us but it’s all about three points and we’re back top of the league.
Relief is the word. Every team in the league is fighting for something at this point of the season.
Indeed. Here’s to Liverpool being victorious in their fight and finally lifting their first Premier League title at season end.
Up the Mighty (Top of the Table) Reds!
