Remember to Stop and Savor This Moment

In between worrying about upcoming fixtures and hate watching Manchester City games, don’t forget to appreciate that this is the best Liverpool squad in a generation.

As of this writing, it’s the middle of April. Liverpool are top of the league — albeit rather precariously — and they’re 2-0 up in the Champions League quarter-final tie against FC Porto. You know all of this, of course. I have no idea what Liverpool’s fate will be at the end of it all.

I want them to win the league. I want them to win in Europe. But even if they don’t, I think it’s worth reflecting now on just how spectacular a moment this is that we are all living through.

In four-to-six weeks, depending on the results of their Champions League push, it will be too late to appreciate the gift we’ve been given with this team.

So think of me as your fairy godmother, helpfully reminding you to slow down, stop worrying about whether Manchester City will drop points or Cardiff rise like Jesus Christ himself on Sunday and have their best game of the season against the Reds, and instead marvel at the towering majesty of Virgil van Dijk, the searing left foot of Mohamed Salah, the indefatigable energy of Andy Robertson.

Stop and take some mental pictures now. Remember what it feels like before the book is shut on this season.

In May, if Liverpool win the league, this season will be deemed a success. If they’re runners up, even though they’re pretty much guaranteed to accumulate at least 90 points, the season will be labeled a failure. If they fail to win the Champions League, they’ve bottled it again — never mind the fact that they’ve made it to the knockout stages two years running after almost a decade without a sniff.

So make some decisions now. Savor this moment now. Beating Manchester City by a point or two at the end shouldn’t determine how well this team performed this season. We are 35 games in, and Liverpool have only lost once, for pete’s sake. Once.

Regardless of what they win or don’t win in the next month, this is a Liverpool team that will go down in the history books as one of the best of all time, and at the most, we’ve got eight games left to enjoy it.

I don’t know what next season will bring, but I know for certain what Wednesday will bring. Liverpool will step out on the pitch in Portugal armed with the best defense in world football. And up top, their front three will be the most dangerous and effective trio this side of Daenerys’ dragons. Bippidy-boppity-boo: I command you to get out those mental cameras and remember that.
