Van Dijk Injury Update: We’re Waiting with Bated Breath
The greatest defender in the world was injured keeping Liverpool in the game.
There’s a lot to be said about the football Fowlers smiling down on Anfield today, and the Reds somehow walking away with three points despite doing everything in their power to throw away the hard work of the first half. Still, not everything went our way this weekend, and all our attentions have turned to The Best Defender in the World and his ankle.
Virgil van Dijk, per always, did his absolute best to keep Liverpool in the game, and one of the worst heart-stopping moments came at the 85th minute when Moussa Sissoko and Heung-Min Son made a break for goal with van Dijk the only thing between them and Allison. Van Dijk stopped Sissoko from getting the ball to Son, and Sissoko’s final shot (a much weaker one than we would have seen from Son) was well wide of the goal. An incredibly intelligent (and expected!) move from van Dijk, but unfortunately one that had some serious consequences. Van Dijk walked off the pitch with a limp, and Klopp believes he sustained the injury during the Sissoko challenge.
“We have to see,” Klopp said when asked about van Dijk’s post-match limp. “I’ll ask him [how he got it but] I think it was the situation with Sissoko.
“I don’t know if he twisted it or it was a knock, but he was walking into interviews with a big ice pack (on his ankle).”
Hopefully the ice is just a precautionary measure and we’re going to see van Dijk back in time to play his old club on Friday.
