Liverpool “Deserve a Bit of Silverware” to Show for the 2018-19 Season

For the players and for the fans, a win in the Champions League final would be the right way to see out the season.
James Milner wants Liverpool to channel any disappointment about coming second in the league to Manchester City into their preparations for the Champions League final against Tottenham on June 1st, saying that game can be both redemption and reward.
“When you think of 30 wins out of 38, at the start of the season you’d like to think that’s good enough,” Milner told the club’s official website today. “But obviously that shows how good Man City are as well. It’s disappointing.
“We have to be proud of what we’ve achieved. Unfortunately it’s just short, but what we did [against Barcelona] gives us a chance to go and redeem ourselves and get a piece of silverware because I think everyone deserves a bit of silverware.”
Whether this Liverpool side actually need to do any redeeming is far from certain—with 97 points and just one loss all year in the league, it’s hard to fault them in any way for coming in second to City. A bit of silverware, though, would certainly seem fitting.
This is a group that has done so well and achieved so much this season without anything to show for it, and a win in the final would be remembered as deserved reward for that and also as a platform for even more success in the future.
“What we’ve been through in the last two weeks,” Milner added, “from Barcelona away, putting on a good performance and losing, to go to Newcastle with a quick turnaround and grind out a result and then bounce back again—I haven’t got enough good words to say about the character within the squad.
“The fans have been unbelievable all year, they’ve lifted us when we’ve needed them, they’ve stuck with us when it’s been tough in games and like I say, the boys deserve a bit of silverware, but the fans do too.”
