Young Liverpool Winger Will Reportedly Sign a New Contract

Sheyi Ojo is expected to remain a Red but will spend another season gaining experience on loan.

Sheyi Ojo has been on the cusp of advancement to Liverpool’s first team for a few seasons. A speedy, attacking player, Ojo has the wherewithal to be an influence in the fast-paced world of Jürgen Klopp football but the manager has largely preferred to send the player out on loan to gain professional match experience.

The England u-21 winger was previously set up at Fulham by Klopp, and before that, Wolverhampton and Wigan Athletic by Brendan Rodgers. Ojo is still only 21-years-old and has plenty of time to improve his performances and reach the first team at Liverpool but he’ll need to start scoring goals.

Ojo spent the last season in Ligue 1 playing for Stade de Reims. He made just 13 appearances for the French side and failed to hit a ball into the back of a net.

Klopp is reportedly happy or happy enough with Ojo’s performances because it’s being suggested that Liverpool are about to offer the player a new long-term contract. Just last summer Ojo signed fresh papers before heading off to France. This time he’ll be secure under the Liverpool umbrella for more than a year. Andy Hunter wrote in the Guardian of a five-year deal.

Sheyi won’t be returning to Reims next season but probably has a host of suitors ready to pitch for his services. Hunter also suggested that Steven Gerrard is a fan and could be working to bring Ojo to Scotland to play for Rangers.

Ojo is a promising player but history tells us that the odds of him becoming a regular at Liverpool are slim. There are no rules to when a player should take a step up in development but this Liverpool side are only getting better and that will make it all the more difficult for young players to work their way into the squad. You always had to be really good. Now, you have to be really, really, really good. Or even really, really, really, really good.
