John Henry: Liverpool Will ‘Focus’ on Winning Premier League

The Liverpool owner lays out the expectations for next season

As you may be aware, Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group also own the American baseball team, the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox are playing a historic series of games in London this weekend against their rivals, the New York Yankees. This is the first time Major League Baseball has held games in the UK. John Henry used that as a backdrop to talk to the media about Liverpool.

“To me winning in Europe is bigger than winning in England but I think it’s true the fans want it,” Henry told the media. “I know we’re going to be focused on winning the Premier League next year.”

He may technically be right about the Champions League being the bigger trophy, but it’s nice to know the Liverpool owner is ‘focused’ on ending Liverpool’s league title drought, something familiar to the Boston Red Sox.

Of course, the subject of transfers came up in the conversation.

“We need to get healthy,” he said in response. “We need AOC (Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain) back, we need a healthy (Adam) Lallana. It’s not up to me but I would guess we will see more of Divock (Origi) next year. I think he brings something special, he comes with power and speed and brings in scoring.”

Obviously, Henry isn’t going to tell the media straight up that they’re signing a bunch of new players. Liverpool have a great squad.

”I feel really good about next year.” He continued.“Our guys gave it their all from the first day of the season to the last. It’s a long season, they played up to their capabilities and just gave so much effort. It didn’t matter who the opponent was, they out-ran every opponent and I felt they deserved to walk away with a trophy.

”We walked away with the biggest one so I’m very happy.”
