Jurgen Klopp set for new deal after Champions League victory

Liverpool are set to hand Jurgen Klopp a lucrative new contract after the German manager guided his side to a spectacular Champions League victory in Madrid on Saturday.

The Reds beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at theWanda Metropolitano to win Europe’s top prize for the sixth time, courtesy of goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi.

And Klopp, who has been Liverpool boss since 2015, was elated both with his side’s triumph on the night and the welcome his team received when they returned to Merseyside yesterday.

“I don’t know exactly how many people live in Liverpool but there’s not a lot of space for fans and supporters of other clubs, so it’s incredible,” said Klopp, as quoted by the Telegraph.

“This team is really doing so well and if you are a young kid which team would you support? There are not a lot of other options and opportunities apart from Liverpool so it’s really nice to see. You see in their eyes how much it means. It’s unbelievable and it’s so intense. Today, wow. It’s crazy.

“I cannot really describe it because I cried a little bit as well because it’s so overwhelming what the people are doing. When you have a direct eye contact and you see how much it means to them that’s touching to be honest. It’s brilliant. It’s really special.”

Klopp’s Liverpool contract still has three years left to see out, but FSG are eager to tie him down to a longer deal as soon as possible.

The German is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after managers in the world, with a host of top clubs monitoring his continued progress at Anfield.

“When the players threw Jürgen in the air after our victory, they were acknowledging what all Liverpool fans know – he is beloved by all who appreciate football,” Tom Werner said of Klopp.

“Jürgen is a brilliant coach. But just as importantly he is a humble and caring man who is happy today because he knows what it means to our supporters”
