Rumor Mongering: Divock Origi Reportedly Close to Signing New Deal

If the report is to be believed, Big Divock will be signing a 5-year extension with a significant pay bump.

In 2018/19 Divock Origi scored 7 goals and added a single assist in 21 appearances across all competitions for Liverpool. On the surface these numbers aren’t phenomenal, but there’s little doubt that Origi will go down as an all-time Anfield Cult Hero.

He had that winner against Everton. Another winner against Newcastle United to keep Liverpool’s title hopes alive. And of course, his three goals in the Champions League semifinal and final, including the winner against Barcelona, and the one that put the game against Tottenham Hotspur to bed.

We have not yet seen whether Origi is a great goal scorer, but he is certainly a scorer of great (or at least significant) goals.

Considering his impact off the bench, it’s no mystery why Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool would want to keep the Belgian striker around. And now, if reports from Football Insider are to be believed, Origi and Liverpool are close to agreeing to terms for a new 5-year contract.

It’s not necessarily a source you’d bet your mortgage on, but they claim:

“A Liverpool source has told Football Insider that Origi has yet to give the club a definitive answer but they are hopeful he will put pen to paper after manager Klopp spoke to him while he was on holiday.

“The German assured the 24-year-old he will have a big role to play again next season even though there will remain intense competition for places in the attacking positions at Anfield.”

The more likely explanation is that this report is more speculative than they claim, and that they are merely extrapolating from the widely reported claim that Liverpool are trying to sign Origi up for an extension to make an educated prediction.

Of course people know people, and some of those people might talk off the record, so there might be some truth in it. Maybe.

But we can all hope that it’s true. Even if Origi does not stick around at Liverpool beyond next season, a new contract would put the club in a position to benefit financially from Divock’s eventual departure.

As for now, we’ll remain skeptical until we see more reliable reporting and/or a staged photo of Divock Origi putting pen to blank paper.
