Official: Alisson Becker and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Take New Numbers

The two Liverpool stars will be wearing new numbers for the 2019-20 season.

Alisson Becker and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will both be wearing new shirt numbers for the 2019-20 season, with the Brazilian stopper moving to his preferred number one and Oxlade-Chamberlain making the switch from 21 to 15.

While only official as of today, Alisson’s switch was always expected—one is his preferred number, but with Loris Karius’ loan to Besiktas not coming until two weeks into the last season, it hadn’t been available to him when he arrived at the club.

For Oxlade-Chamberlain, there had been some buzz in recent weeks that when Daniel Sturridge became official on July 1st and the 15 feel vacant that he would switch to the number he wore for most of his time at Arsenal.

While one is the traditional choice for starting goalkeepers in football—and for Alisson, who when he joined the club liked to sign off with AB1—in the Premier League era at Liverpool there haven’t exactly been a lot of star starters wearing it.

In that time, there has been Bruce Grobbelaar as the standout and Jerzy Dudek winning the Champions League final wearing it, then it’s a list comprised of Brad Jones, David James, Diego Cavalieri, Sander Westerveld, and Loris Karius.

For Oxlade-Chamberlain’s new (at least with Liverpool) number 15, before Daniel Sturridge it was the number worn by Yossi Benayoun, Peter Crouch, Salif Diao, Patrik Berger, and Jamie Redknapp.
