Rumour Mongering: Andy Lonergan Likely to Arrive as Short Term Goalkeeping Cover

It makes a degree of sense.
So the big news that you already know is that Alisson is injured, for it’s thought to be around 4-8 weeks.
Liverpool’s current second choice goalkeeper is new signing Adrián and he looks likely to just slot straight in for the time being. That all seems fine. Not ideal, but fine.
The knock-on effect goes elsewhere. The third choice keeper is generally Caoimhin Kelleher, the academy graduate who should be more than capable of the arduous task of sitting on the bench and warming up for a few games. Klopp likes him but admits there are some fitness issues with Kelleher.
“With Caoimhin, he is not injured”, The Irish Independent quotes him as saying. “He is back in training but not at 100 percent. We have to see how he reacts now. Clearly, we’re a bit short in that position.”
And so, for the time being, there is a bit of a void to fill. Readers with long memories stretching all the way back to a month ago will be aware that Andy Lonergan was involved in Liverpool’s preseason tour. It wasn’t seen as anything other than a chance for him to gain fitness and Liverpool filled some preseason minutes when goalkeeping options were short. It was assumed that would be the end of that.
Lonergan isn’t exactly a great goalkeeper. He’s spent his career bouncing around Football League clubs in England as a testament to that. The club apparently think he’s a good guy to have around. And so, with need to fill a spot on the bench, BBC and everyone else are reporting that the club want to bring Lonergan in on a short term deal, with some claiming he might be on the bench for the European Super Cup this Wednesday. The transfer window is closed, but you often get exceptions made for goalkeepers.
It should be fine. He should come and sit on the bench for a few games. Best of luck, Andy.
