The latest on the Naby Keita injury situation

Naby Keita

Jurgen Klopp confirmed during a press conference that Naby Keita will not be part of the matchday squad to face Southampton on Saturday.

He said: “[Keita is] not available. It’s a muscle thing and we don’t know exactly how long it will take but he’s not available.”

The 24-year-old has had torrid luck with injuries over the past year and it seems as though he isn’t nearing a lucky break with Southampton set to be the 12th game he’s missed through injury since the start of the 2018/19 season.

Liverpool spent £52.5million on the Guinean but are yet to come close to recouping that fee as he simply hasn’t been available often enough to make a meaningful contribution.

Toward the back end of last season, he seemed to be strong and fit but a scissor tackle from Ivan Rakitic saw him injured for the second leg of the semi-final of the Champions League against Barcelona and subsequently the final in Madrid.

There are no question marks over his talent but his injury history is an issue for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to see him come through the latest setback and remain fit for several months.

Liverpool fans are aware of how injuries can wreak havoc on a player’s career and hopefully the same doesn’t happen to Keita.
