Jamie Redknapp makes absurd Liverpool statement

Jamie Redknapp has made an absurd Liverpool statement, claiming that the Reds would only ‘sneak’ into the top four if they lost Virgil van Dijk to injury.

“This, for me, makes Liverpool favourites now; they’re five points ahead and there’s still an enormous amount of time to go,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports.

“Sorry I keep saying it, but you’ve got a six-month injury to one of your best players. It’s the equivalent of taking Virgil van Dijk out of [the] Liverpool back four, for me.Jamie Redknapp makes absurd Liverpool statement

“That’s what we’ve seen today. If you take Van Dijk out of Liverpool, it’s a team that just scraped into the top four. You put him in the team… 97 points [in the league] last year, win the Champions League.

“That’s how big of a difference that Laporte makes to Man City as well.”

While van Dijk has made an enormous difference at Anfield, it’s an insult to the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Andy Robertson and Alisson Becker to insinuate that without van Dijk they would flop massively.

The names above include two Premier League Golden Boot winners, the best false nine in world football, the best fullbacks in the Premier League and potentially the world, the most improved defender in England over the last 12 months and the best goalkeeper on the planet.

Liverpool wouldn’t get 97 points without van Dijk but they’d comfortably get around 85. To say the Dutchman is worth an extra 12-15 points is far fairer than saying without him, the Reds are barely a top-four side when Chelsea last season managed to sneak in.
