Liverpool Confirm Club World Cup Involvement, Postpone West Ham Match

It’s hardly a surprise, but with December’s West Ham match postponed, Liverpool’s involvement is now official.

Liverpool’s involvement in the Club World Cup in December is officially official today with news of their match against West Ham on December 21 having been postponed. A new date has not been confirmed, but depending on their League Cup involvement space would likely be found in January.

For now, though, West Ham is off the table. And on in its place are a Club World Cup match on the 18th of December and then on the 21st, with Liverpool entering at the semi-final stage and playing that game mid-week before taking part in either the final or third-place match on the weekend.

The tournament, set to take place in Qatar, now has five of seven teams confirmed. Host Al-Saad will take on OFC’s Hienghene Sport in the qualifying first round. They will then be joined by CONCACAF’s Monterrey and CAF’s Espérance de Tunis in round two—along with the AFC representative.

Liverpool and CONMEBOL’s 2019 Copa Libertadores winner then enter at the semi-final stage, with the two sides placed on opposite sides of the bracket—all but guaranteeing a Europe vs. South America final. The CONMEBOL and AFC representatives won’t be known until the end of November.

With the West Ham match postponed and the two Club World Cup games now officially scheduled in its place, Liverpool will have eight games in a busy December including five in the league and their final Champions League group stage match, which they will play on the road against RB Salzburg.
