Liverpool Name 29 Players to 2019-20 Champions League Group Stage Squad

Ki-Jana Hoever and Nahtniel Clyne miss out as injury concerns mean the Reds name four goalkeepers.
Liverpool submitted their Champions League squad list today for the group stage of the tournament, and for the most part there were no surprises—and certainly nothing quite as surprising as Emre Can being left off Juventus’ squad list.
However, there was no room on the 22-man A-list for injured Nathaniel Clyne, who is not expected to be fit this calendar year. There was also no room for Ki-Jana Hoever, with the club preferring to use what space they had on extra goalkeeper depth.
Four goalkeeper are named in total, with Alisson and Adrian both in the mix as expected—but due perhaps to Alisson’s current injury, Andy Lonergan takes up a spot on the A-list, while Caoimhin Kelleher is included on the B-list.
Champions League squad rules stipulate that to be eligible, players who turned 21 before January 1st of this year must be named to the A-list along with anyone younger who hasn’t been at the club for at least two full seasons.
The A-list can contain a maximum of 25 players. However, a minimum of eight players must be domestically trained and a minimum of four of those players in turn must be club trained in order for a club to reach the 25-man maximum.
The B-list can contain as many players as are eligible, but to be eligible a player must not have turned 21 before the first of the current calendar year and must have been at the club for two seasons. Liverpool named seven such B-list players.
Liverpool’s squad composition then meant that they could only name 22 on the A-List, and as 17-year-old Hoever hasn’t been at the club long enough, he would have needed to be. Next season, he will be eligible for the B-list.
Conversely, while Hoever was left out, there was room on the A-list for 17-year-old Sepp van den Berg and 16-year-old Harvey Elliott. Both will be eligible for the B-list in two years, and all three will count as club trained when they turn 21.
