Liverpool’s Adrian “Can’t Be Happy” with Strong Performance in Napoli Loss

Nobody could blame him for Tuesday’s loss, but he isn’t taking any solace from a strong personal performance.

Liverpool may have suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Napoli on Tuesday evening, but nobody could blame goalkeeper Adrian for the result, with the club’s new backup ‘keeper impressing in what was his Champions League debut.

The veteran Spaniard made a number of key stops to keep the game level and even got a hand to Napoli’s dubiously-awarded penalty opener—but he says he can’t be happy with a good night personally given that disappointing final scoreline.

“It’s my job as a goalkeeper, to try to save all the balls as much as I can and to try to help the team,” he told the club’s official website after the match. “I gave my best, I tried hard. But at the end of the day we lost 2-0, so I can’t be happy.

“We knew it was going to be a hard game for us, like last season was. At the end of the game it was small details—the penalty switched the game for them totally and then we lost a bit of shape and conceded the second one.”

It was a hard game in Naples, just like last season’s in the Champions League group stage. It was a better performance, though, and given that Napoli penalty it was a very harsh result and on the run of play things likely should have ended level.

That—a stronger performance compared to last year and the seeming injustice of the penalty—at least make it easy to move on now that the game is over, with Adrian and his teammates looking to continuing their strong form in the league.

“We are on a good run,” he added. “We have won 14 [league] games in a row. We have a difficult game against Chelsea away on Sunday. We have to switch our minds now, learn from the mistakes today, and then turn the page.”
