The former Manchester City defender put the Reds stalwart at the very top of the list.

One will be hard pressed to find a Liverpool supporter who doesn’t rate club record signing Virgil Van Dijk as the very best defender in all the land. Increasingly, as evidenced by the 28-year-old’s frontrunner candidacy for the Ballon d’Or, the rest of the footballing world isn’t far behind.

That surprisingly includes one-time nemesis Vincent Kompany, who has taken it one step further to name Van Dijk the best defender to have ever graced the Premier League.

“I would bring it back to Virgil van Dijk,” the long-time City captain and current player-manager at Anderlecht said of the Liverpool colossus, putting him ahead of the likes of John Terry and Sol Campbell.

“He’s not been on the scene as long as Terry, [Rio] Ferdinand who have been around for a long time but the signs he’s shown in the last few years [that he is better]. He’s shown if he had been around longer he’d have been at the top for a long time.”

The proof is of course in the Dutchman’s pudding. The no 4’s big money arrival in December 2017 proved to be the catalyst for one of the most drastic turnarounds in the sport, transforming one the Premier League’s leakiest defenses into the stingiest in Europe’s top five leagues.

“The Liverpool before Van Dijk and after are a completely different setup. I’ll give him that one,” Kompany marveled.

Yeah, we’ve noticed.
