Graeme Souness explains why Philippe Coutinho departure aided Liverpool

Philippe Coutinho

Reds legend Graeme Souness believes that Liverpool selling Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona allowed Jurgen Klopp’s side to become a proper football team.

The Reds sold the Brazilian to Barcelona for £142 million in January 2018, which gave Klopp the funds needed to sign players that gave his side more balance.

Souness, despite believing that Liverpool were better to watch a couple of years ago with a player like Coutinho playing, was keen to point out that the Reds are now a more complete side.

“Maybe, for the neutral, they [Liverpool] were a better watch a couple of years ago,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“But when they got rid of Coutinho and brought in Van Dijk and Alisson, that’s when they made that jump.

“All of a sudden they’re a proper team.”

Coutinho, who is now on loan at Bayern Munich, was a sensational player for the Reds, but there is no denying that his departure has aided Liverpool.

Since Coutinho left Merseyside, Liverpool have won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

There is also a serious possibility that the Reds could claim a Premier League title this season, with the club sitting 13 points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand.

This ultimately stems from the fact Klopp was able to sign the players he desperately needed with the money generated from Coutinho’s departure.

Liverpool’s next assignment is Sheffield United at Anfield in the Premier League.
