Premier League Conduct Second Round Of Coronavirus Testing For Players And Staff

While no Liverpool player or staff member tested positive, two additional players in the Premier League did test positive, bringing the total cases up to 8 across the league

According to the Premier League, two additional players tested positive for the Coronavirus after a second round of testing of players and staff. That brings the total to eight positive cases in the league. Thankfully, the results for Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool side came back negative for the virus.

Anyone testing positive will undergo quarantine for seven days before being screened again. To this point, none of the original six positive tests were retested, according to a statement from the Premier League.

The six who tested positive in the first round of testing are not included in the figures for 19-22 May, as they are still within their seven-day self-isolation period.

The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency. No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing.

While the league is not releasing information on who has tested positive, some clubs and players are waiving their rights to anonymity. Watford confirmed that they had one player and two staff members who tested positive in the first round of testing. Adrian Mariappe confirmed he tested positive despite showing no symptoms.

Bournemouth have also confirmed that one of their players tested positive for the virus, with their positive result coming in the second round of testing. The club and player have decided not to release the name of the player at this point.

While the league is hoping their protocols will help minimize the spread of the virus among players and staff in the league, not all players feel safe to train. Chelsea’s N’Golo Kanté has stated he doesn’t feel it is safe to train at this point, and his club have thankfully listened to his concerns and granted him “compassionate leave”.
