Jordan Henderson’s Reunion with Danny Ings Prompts Funny “Warning” from Southampton

Southampton told the Liverpool skipper not to get any “funny ideas” after Tweeting some love for the Saints striker.

Danny Ings’ tenure with Liverpool will likely be remembered more for his struggles to stay on the field than his contributions on it, as he managed only 25 appearances and four goals in four years with the Reds thanks to a pair of knee injuries. Despite his lack of playing time, he was very popular among fans, many of whom were sad to see him go no matter how much sense it made for both the player and the club.

Ings has managed to find fitness and form since a loan to Southampton in 2018 that eventually turned into a permanent transfer. He’s become a consistent goal scorer for the Saints, and his efforts saw him finish the 2019-20 season with 25 goals in all competitions and tied for 2nd in the race for the Golden Boot with 22 Premier League goals.

This resurgence has led to Ings being called up to the England squad in each of the last two international breaks. Jordan Henderson, who spoke very highly of Ings before Liverpool faced Southampton this past February, was happy to be reunited with his former teammate in England training today.

Southampton’s social media team saw Henderson expressing his love for Ings as an opportunity to have a bit of fun.

Liverpool have famously bought a litany of Southampton players in recent years, including stars Sadio Mané and Virgil van Dijk, so the jokes about Henderson trying to sway the rejuvenated Ings to return to Liverpool practically write themselves. Southampton can’t be blamed for wanting to playfully warn Henderson away from their star striker.

Fortunately for Southampton, Liverpool seem content with their current attacking options, and there is likely very little risk of the 28-year-old Ings returning to Merseyside. Though, many Liverpool fans, and maybe even some Liverpool players, would love to see such a likable character pull on the red shirt again.

It’s really enjoyable to see Ings having so much success with Southampton after 4 years of frustration, for player and fans alike, during his time with Liverpool. I think I speak for many supporters when I say that I’m really happy to see him getting national team call ups, and I hope he continues to find the back of the net for Southampton, though maybe not when they play the Reds.
