The star forward will miss Sunday’s match against Aston Villa and this month’s international matches for Senegal.

Liverpool FC have announced that Sadio Mané has tested positive for COVID-19. According to the club statement, he is showing minor symptoms, but feels in good health overall. After the positive test he will be required to self isolate for the next 10 days.

This means Mané will miss Sunday’s match against Aston Villa, and he will have to withdraw from national team duty with Senegal during the international break next week. He should be eligible to return to the Liverpool lineup at Everton on October 17.

Shortly after the announcement on the LFC website, Mané took to Instagram to share a message of reassurance, and he encouraged others to follow COVID-19 mitigation guidelines and help prevent further spread of the virus.

Mané is now the third Liverpool player to test positive for COVID-19. He joins Kostas Tsimikas, who tested positive while on international duty with Greece in early September, and Thiago Alcântara, who tested positive just three days ago.

One can only hope that Mané and Thiago isolated themselves before spreading the virus to their teammates. However, with reports that it can take up to five days from the time of infection to test positive, it’s very troubling that two players have now tested positive in such a short time.

This situation can only add to the level of concern that manager, Jürgen Klopp, was already feeling about the upcoming international break. If COVID is spreading throughout the locker room, the increased potential of exposure to the virus as players travel and play across the world could compound the problem.
