Reds’ Legend Believes Liverpool Should Have Kept Rhian Brewster

Phil Thompson has some thoughts on our transfers.

Former Liverpool centre-back Phil Thompson, who made over 300 appearances for the club in the 70s and 80s, had some words to say on our transfer activity this summer, particularly on outgoings.

The 66-year old former Liverpool and England star believes that Rhian Brewster should have had a role at the club this season.

“‘On the outgoings [at Liverpool], I’m disappointed that they decided to let Rhian Brewster go”, Thompson told Paddy Power.

“I’d like him to have stayed. I can see some of the reasons why, but if you were asking me whether to go with Brewster or Divock Origi, for me, it’d be Origi going.”

“But on the football side, I can see he isn’t playing as many games, so maybe it’ll get him that first team experience. There’s not too many forwards that have the aggression that Brewster has though,” he added.

Other than swapping Origi with Brewster for an exit, Thompson also believes that Swiss midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri could have brought in some useful revenue for the club in sale.

He is however optimistic about the new additions to the squad.

“Maybe the outgoings haven’t gone the way they’d like – but the incomings have been really good. Liverpool had a really decent transfer market. I heard people saying following the defeat that they felt they hadn’t had a good window – but that, to me, is harsh.”

Liverpool brought in some world-class talent in the form of Thiago Alcantara, as well as young and upcoming players Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas, and most recently Marcelo Pitaluga. They will add some much-needed depth to the squad particularly in the busy winter months when fixtures pile up across competitions.
