Xherdan Shaqiri Rejoins Swiss National Team Following Negative Coronavirus Test

It has been confirmed the Liverpool attacker does not have an active case of COVID-19 following a second test.

Earlier in the week, news broke that Xherdan Shaqiri had tested positive for COVID-19 on joining up with the Swiss national team and would be entering into self-isolation. Today, he’s returning to the fold following a negative test for the virus.

This latest news follows speculation that the player’s positive test may have been the result of Shaqiri previously having contracted the virus—something rumours earlier this week suggested Swiss national team doctors had been made aware of.

While Shaqiri returns to training with the team today, the Swiss will be without Borussia Dortmund centre half Manuel Akanji, who is in self-isolation and reportedly showing no symptoms following the return of a positive test on Wednesday.

Switzerland lost their first game of the international break, a friendly against Croatia on Wednesday. They now take on Spain on Saturday and Germany on Tuesday in the Nations League before releasing players back to their clubs.

Meanwhile for Shaqiri, there has been no confirmation when he contracted the virus, but it appears he is not in fact the third Liverpool player to do so in quick succession following Thiago Alcantara and Sadio Mané’s recent positive tests.
