Liverpool’s Brazilian midfield anchor says that this is a side fully ready to meet the challenge.

Last season, Liverpool tallied up 97 points in the league and won their sixth European Cup. Even if they couldn’t manage to end their domestic title drought, it was a historic season for the red half of Merseyside.

And it’s the kind of season the players and coaching staff fully intend to repeat in 2019-20 according to star defensive midfielder Fabinho, who says that last season’s exertions have fully prepared them for another run.

“Last year we showed it was possible,” he told the club magazine. “We were able to maintain the intensity and high standard in both competitions. It’s exhausting, it demands a lot from the entire squad of players.

“It demands a lot of the coaching staff as well, working on recovery and preparation every two days. It’s very, very difficult, [but] the team has shown that it is focused, has ambition, and is prepared for this challenge.”

In the league they’ve started as though they are, perfect through five opening rounds of Premier League action. Now, against Napoli—the most difficult side on paper in their group—they begin their European defence.

“The reigning champion is always the favourite,” Fabinho added. “But it doesn’t put any additional pressure on us, we know how to deal with it, we know how to handle the pressure. It won’t be a problem.

“The Champions League is the toughest competition in Europe with all the best teams involved. We’ll do everything to qualify for the round of 16. It’s a case of taking things step by step.”
