Alisson’s injury means Caoimhin Kelleher will step in for about five games.

At the presser for Liverpool FC’s Europa League group stage game against LASK, manager Jürgen Klopp provided an update on Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota’s injuries and then spoke of his confidence in deputy Caoimhin Kelleher:

“He would have played anyway. Nobody, Caoimhin included, wanted Ali to get injured, but if these kinds of things happen you need the strongest possible option. That’s Caoimhin for us. He deserves his opportunity to get a few more games and hopefully show his full potential.”

When Alisson is healthy, Kelleher features almost exclusively in cup competitions, most famously when he scored the winning penalty in the shootout against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup in the 21/22 season. That shows in his appearances, with just five appearances out of his 26 made coming in the Premier League.

It’s a really rare chance for Kelleher to start consecutive games. Assuming Alisson returns for the United game as projected by Klopp, it’ll mean Big Kweev will be in goal for the next five games starting with Fulham at home this Sunday. Go get ‘em.
