Perhaps the Reds have found a permanent man to lead their sporting project.

Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that current Liverpool FC Sporting Director Jörg Schmadtke will leave the club after the upcoming January transfer window.

It’s probably not surprising, given that he had to be coaxed out of retirement for the gig, and Liverpool have continued to be linked with names for the sporting director position this season. This could be a sign that Liverpool are close to appointing someone to that role on a more permanent basis.

It’s said to be a mutual parting of ways on both sides. Overall, the Schmadtke era has been a continuation of what has been done previously and nothing too earth-shattering. Two release clauses were activated in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, and a bargain in Ryan Gravenberch. His German expertise came in handy when we had to scramble for an emergency defensive midfielder in Wataru Endo after the collapse of the Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia deals.

Perhaps we’ll continue to collaborate as Liverpool does seem more interested in prying players from the Bundesliga again. Still, we never really know if that’ll change again in the future with a new head honcho in charge of transfer again.
