Arne Slot heads Liverpool in their first friendly of the season against Preston North End.

Liverpool played their first friendly behind closed doors at the AXA Training Centre. The result wasn’t what Arne Slot would have wanted, with the Reds losing 1-0 to Championship side Preston North End.

The first half featured senior players like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Dominik Szoboszlai while the second half was played by the Academy players.

After the game, Slot talked about the pre-season finally kicking off.

“The most important thing is that everybody was fit before the game and they stayed fit during the game as well,” he said.

“So, it’s been a good two weeks. Unfortunately the result today was not what we wanted, but they stayed fit, many of them got minutes [and] also a lot of young players got a few minutes so that was a good thing.”

Slot agreed that this match shed light on the areas where the team needs to improve in the coming few weeks before the season truly kicks off. However, with the upheaval of the club, the various international competitions, and the fact that it has only been two weeks, Slot has reasonably put the positives before the negatives.

“So, we couldn’t have asked for more from the boys in the first two weeks – [they have] worked really hard, tried to implement ideas and it’s not that we only bring new ideas. There are a lot of things that have been done here that were really good.

“So, like I said, a bit unlucky to lose 1-0 if you only conceded one shot.”

The next game they play will be against Real Betis on July 26th in the first match of their US pre-season tour.
