Dominik Szobsozlai was left out of the squad that faced Manchester United in an effort to manage some minutes for the Hungarian midfielder ahead of the Premier League season.

When Liverpool lined up to take on Manchester United in their final preseason match on the tour of the United States, one of their key senior team players was not in the squad. Dominik Szoboszlai was absent after starting the first two preseason matches under Arne Slot leading to a flurry of worry.

After Liverpool dispatched a hapless Manchester United 3-0 with clinical efficiency, Slot provided an update on the Hungarian midfielder. It appears Szoboszlai’s exclusion was nothing more than managing minutes on his legs.

”I think it’s our 13th day of the tour. Dominik joined every session and every game, and we played the last one two days ago.”

“I think it’s a bit of fatigue and we don’t want to take any risks because we fly back to Liverpool tonight and on Tuesday all the other players arrive as well, so we want to start off then with all the players available and we didn’t want to take any risk with him today.”

Ryan Gravenberch was given the start alongside Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott in Szoboszlai’s absence. The Dutch midfielder impressed in his first appearance under Slot, seeming to thrive in the system that looks to have the deeper midfielders invite pressure to pull players out of position to create a passing lane or opportunity to turn away from the pressure and progress the ball.
