The defender was rumoured to be included in a deal that would swap him for Anthony Gordon.

Our longest serving player at the moment is staying with the club. For now.

Paul Joyce at The Times is reporting that a deal with north-eastern club Newcastle United has fallen through during negotiations, despite rumours of the contrary.

The deal would’ve seen Gomez move to Newcastle for £45 million, and Liverpool receiving Anthony Gordon for £75 million, which isn’t an offensive price for the range of positions that Gomez offers. He has always been a desirable player for other clubs, even as he found himself third choice centerback for a long time. It would just be a shame to see Gomez leave before he ever scored a goal for us.

Though indeed it did appear that a deal was in process, as Newcastle fight to get on the good side of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules during June, Gomez himself never got the chance to speak to the Magpies. Arne Slot made sure to contact Gomez while he was away on Euros duty and Joyce reports that the talks focused on the upcoming season, implying that Slot has plans for the versatile defender and wants him included.

The deal was ended, though, when Newcastle offloaded Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, lightening their wage bills just a little bit. This also meant that a big cash out for their most desirable player is not happening this season. Probably.

Thankfully it appears that if we’re letting anyone leave, it’ll be in the next week or so as Slot gets a better assessment of his full squad now that some of the last six have returned to training. Liverpool also reportedly threw water on a potential £15 million deal with Southampton for Fabio Carvalho, who seems to be fitting quite nicely into Slot’s plans.

Honestly, this writer isn’t a fan of Anthony Gordon and finds the rumours of him joining us pretty preposterous so writing this has been like a balm to my transfer season burned skin.
