Having spent the second half of last season at Wigan on loan, the 20-year-old fullback returns to continue his development.

As much as chances at playing time are essential for any player’s development, one downside of the loan system that many point to is its lack of continuity, with young players too often bounced from club to club each season.

One potential solution to the issue is to allow players who have had a successful loan spell to return to the same club, something Liverpool had already embraced this summer with right back Calvin Ramsay’s return to Wigan Athletic on loan.

Now, they’re doubling down on that approach with left back Luke Chambers, who spent the second half of the 2023-24 season at Wigan with Ramsay and now returns along with him to the League One side for the 2024-25 season.

Chambers made 18 appearances for Wigan last season after joining in January, helping them to finish solidly mid-table in England’s third tier. Heading into 2024-25, promotion will be the target for Wigan and their two Liverpool loanees.

Before joining Wigan mid-way through last season, Chambers earned four first team Liverpool appearances, coming on as a substitute once in the League Cup and playing three times in the Europa League with one start.
