Local sources suggest Real Sociedad are increasingly resigned to losing star defensive midfielder Martín Zubimendi to Liverpool.

While nothing is ever certain in the land of transfer rumours until the deal is done and the new player signed, all signs point to Liverpool being close to making their first signing of the summer as local reports now suggest Martín Zubimendi is likely to join the Reds.

The 25-year-old Real Sociedad and Spain midfielder has in the past rejected overtures from Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and even Barcelona but Liverpool appear poised to succeed where others before them have failed by convincing the Euro winner of their project—and having the cash on hand to pay his €60M release clause in full.

That’s according to local journalists at Noticias de Gipuzkoa, who describe the current situation as a “nightmare” for Sociedad due to their belief that the player believes now—unlike in past summers when those other clubs came calling—is the right time for him to take the next step.

Real Madrid are also said to have been interested in Zubimendi this summer, but with a well stocked midfield and having spent big to bring in Kylian Mbappe already their interest is eclipsed by Liverpool’s and they’ve signalled an unwillingness to meet his release clause.

It appears, then, a case of everything aligning perfectly for Liverpool to make a major statement of intent signing, capturing a player highly admired across Europe’s top clubs as he enters his prime years—and signalling that they too remain amongst that elite even following the departure of Jürgen Klopp.
