Netherlands Knocked Out of Nations League in Latest Blow for Van Dijk

Liverpool and Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk has not had an especially enjoyable March.
It’s been a rough two weeks for Liverpool and Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk, with the star centre half seeing his club side knocked out of the Champions League on penalties and then losing the League Cup before heading off to join his national team.
There, the Dutch faced Spain in a two-legged Nations League quarter-final, drawing both games against their Iberian opposition but eventually being knocked out of the competition on penalties after extra time on Sunday by a 5-4 margin.
Van Dijk at least did his part, taking the first penalty kick of the night to give the Netherlands an early edge, but Mikel Merino levelled immediately for Spain. Both sides then went four for five, with Noa Lang and Lamine Yamal both missing in the fourth round.
That sent the penalties to round six and sudden death where Donyell Malen missed for the Netherlands before Pedri converted to send Spain to the next round where they will take on France in a single leg semi-final June 5th ahead of a June 8th final.
