Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk says there have been talks but he still does not know if he will be at the club beyond the end of the 2024-25 season.

A difficult defeat on Tuesday evening sees Liverpool out of the Champions League after Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain won 1-0 at Anfield to take the two-legged tie to extra time and then break the deadlock on penalties to advance past the Premier League leaders and tournament favourites.

It’s a defeat that not only knocks the Reds out of one of the trophies they were fighting for—and that many saw them as favourites to win—but that turns the spotlight back on the fact the 2024-25 season is entering its final stretch. And Liverpool are yet to agree new deals with three key stars.

“I still have no idea at the moment,” said captain Virgil van Dijk when asked after about his future at the club given he is set to be out of contract at the end of the campaign. “Genuinely I have no idea at the moment. It’s not on hold, nothing is on hold. I just keep saying the same thing.

“There are ten games to go, and that’s my full focus. If there is news, you guys will know. I don’t even know myself. There are some conversations behind the scenes but that is about it. So at the moment, even I don’t know what will happen next year If anyone says they do know, they are lying.”

For Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, 33 and 32 years of age respectively and into the final months of their contracts, Tuesday will have been an especially tough blow. Both can count themselves amongst Liverpool’s best of all time, but arguably their trophy hauls remain slight for such conversations.

Coming up against Manchester City in England and Real Madrid multiple times in Europe mean the duo have one league and one European title. In any other era, though, both would likely have three of each. This season had seemed, at least for a time, a chance to correct that somewhat.

Now, instead, they must quickly move past disappointment and focus on the League Cup final Sunday and then ensuring they stay at the top of the league table lest a chance at domestic glory slip away as well with the season—and potentially their Liverpool careers—in their final months.
