New Liverpool Squad Numbers Announced: Wirtz Gets No. 7
Plus, new numbers for Conor Bradley and other new signings.
Per the club’s official website, Liverpool FC have assigned new squad numbers to the following players:
6 – Milos Kerkez
7 – Florian Wirtz
12 – Conor Bradley
22 – Hugo Ekitike
25 – Giorgi Mamardashvili
28 – Freddie Woodman
30 – Jeremie Frimpong
41 – Armin Pecsi
42 – Trey Nyoni

Florian Wirtz inherits the number 7 most recently worn by Luis Diaz, and will join a long list of legendary players who have worn the shirt, from Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan, Luis Suarez, and James Milner. No pressure, buddy.
Conor Bradley also switches to the number 12 from 84, which was previously worn by Joe Gomez, and has been vacant since the latter switched to 2. Who was the last number 12 before Joe you ask? Victor Moses (13/14).
Kerkez inherits the number 6, vacant since Thiago Alcantara last wore it. Dejan Lovren lends the number some knucklehead heritage, with Luis Alberto (13/14), Fábio Aurélio (10/11 - 11/12), Andrea Dossena (09/10), and John Arne Riise (04/05 - 07/08) amongst the other players of recent memory to have worn the number.
Hugo Ekitike takes number 22, last worn by Calvin Ramsay. The history of the number is adorned mainly by goalkeepers, with Loris Karius (21/22), Andy Lonergan (19/20), Simon Mignolet (13/14 - 19/20), Scott Carson (07/08), and Chris Kirkland (01/02 - 04/05) some of the stoppers who have used the number. Emiliano Insúa (08/09 - 09/10), Mohamed Sissoko (05/06 - 07/08), Titi Camara (99/00 - 00/01), and Jamie Carragher (96/97) are outfield players who have worn 22 at some point.
Giorgi Mamardashvili’s 25 has a pretty short history: Pepe Reina (05/06 - 12/13), Igor Biscan (00/01 - 04/05), David Thompson (96/97 - 99/00), Neil Ruddock (93/94 - 95/96). That’s it.
Jeremie Frimpong takes the number 30 he wore at Leverkusen, and it’s a relatively clean slate with this number at Liverpool. The most famous number 30 is probably Champions League winner Djimi Traoré (98/99 - 02/03), although Boudewijn Zenden (05/06) and Suso (14/15, 12/13) may come to mind for some.
Pleasantly surprising is the inclusion of Pecsi and Nyonyi’s numbers, which may indicate that the coaching staff have plans for them in the first-team squad, even if it’s around the fringes. Nyonyi has been making good progress over the last season and scored a nice goal against Yokohama in our previous preseason game.
In the same vein, it’s surprising not to see Rio Ngumoha not get assigned a number, but perhaps this is the team trying to slow down the hype train a little bit, even if his performances have been undeniable and making every daydream about potential superstardom in his future.
