Wigan Want Liverpool Winger Loan

Harry Wilson could be on his way to Wigan Athletic on deadline day.

According to reports out of Manchester, League One leaders Wigan Athletic want to bring in Liverpool youngster Harry Wilson to bolster their promotion chances, with talk today of a loan deal that would see the 20-year-old Wales international join The Latics for the remainder of the season.

However, with the winger’s contract status up in the air at Liverpool, there’s a chance any deal that is made could turn out to be a permanent one—perhaps with a sell-on or buyback clause—rather than a loan deal as Liverpool have previously resisted a short-term departure for Wilson.

The club have not made it clear if his contract expires this summer or in 2019, but in December word leaked out that Wilson had rejected attempts to get him to sign an extension and that Liverpool would not consider loaning him out in January unless he changed his mind.

There has been no sign of such a change on Wilson’s part, which makes talk of a loan to the upwardly mobile Wigan Athletic somewhat unexpected. Still, no matter where Wilson’s long-term future lies, it’s clear he needs first team minutes if he’s to continue his development.

Wigan, either on loan or permanently if the deal can be structured to Liverpool’s liking, would give him that chance.
