Ramesh Nair, a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Imperial College London, explained to Sky Sports how concussion can impact an athletes performance.

Nair believes that the knock Loris Karius received from the elbow of Sergio Ramos could have impacted the performance of the goalkeeper, but only those treating him at the time could have judged whether he suffered from concussion or not.

Liverpool’s medical team were not concerned at the time as symptoms could have been delayed. It was confirmed yesterday though that Karius did suffer from concussion during the Champions League final and should not have played on.

“Yes. I think if he did have concussion then the standard protocol, if there is any doubt, to get the player off the field and give rest and not allow him to play,” Nair told Sky Sports.

“The question is if he complained of any symptoms or any signs.

“It is possible the effects of concussion can develop in a delayed fashion. The question is whether he had concussion at the time of play. It’s something for the doctor to decide.

“But it’s also that symptoms can develop in a week or 10 days time, it often can last for a few weeks or even months.”

Many associate a loss of consciousness with concussion more times than not, but Nair stated that it is not always an indicator whether someone is concussed.

“A loss of consciousness is one of those things but it’s not a level indicator to say that someone has concussion,” Nair said.

“There are other signs and other symptoms you look out for like feeling dizzy and having a headache or some sort of mental cloud, confusion, and feeling a little slowed down can also be a symptom of concussion.

“Some mention visual problems, sickness or fatigue, and if it’s sensitive to the light, there’s definite protocol and guidelines to look for.

“I would have thought that’s been followed at the time it happened.”
