Liverpool supporters showed their affection for the ex-Red by flooding the open fan voting for the Italian club’s player of the year.
Once a Red, always a Red, especially when you are Lucas Leiva. Despite moving on to Lazio at the end of last season after becoming surplus to requirements on Merseyside, Papa Lucas is still fondly remembered by Liverpool fans.
The 31-year-old has been enjoying the final stage of his career in the Serie A, bagging more goals for his new club in one season than he had in the previous eight in England.
Seriously, the lovably goal-shy Brazilian has drunken the the from Italian Ribena fountain of youth and found his striker’s boots to tune of four goals and seven assists, including this instinctive finish:
Impressive though his feats have been, the midfielder hasn’t quite been as essential to the side as say forward Ciro Immoblie, who’s 41 strikes on the year have made an almost Mohamed Salah-esque impact on the side. Nonetheless, when it came time for the club’s player of the year gong to be awarded, it was Lucas who came away with the gong.
Per l’annata 2017-2018, è @LucasLeiva87 il ‘Player of the Season’

While Papa Lucas is probably just that good, the ex-Red also received a boost from Liverpool fans through the open fan voting poll on Twitter.
27,000 people voted on the poll, with more than 19,600 nominating for the midfielder to give him 71 percent of the vote. About 4,000 voted for Immobile, giving him 14 percent of the vote.
Unluckeeee, Immobile.
