Turkish Reports Claim Liverpool Assistant Will Manage Fenerbahce
Zeljko Buvac is set to take charge at Fenerbahce according to multiple reports out of Turkey.
Officially, Zeljko Buvac is still on the books as Liverpool’s assistant manager after departing the club in April, a leave of absence that began mere weeks before the end of the Premier League season and Liverpool’s Champions League final appearance against Real Madrid.
If a series reports out of Turkey this week are to be believed, he won’t be returning to that role. Instead, Buvac now looks set to take over as manager at Fenerbahce, the Turkish Super Lig side that recently appointed former Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli.
A number of Turkish websites and papers, including Sporx and Fanatik, claim Buvac has agreed terms in principle and will be officially unveiled in the coming days. If he does, it will be the first time Jürgen Klopp’s long-time assistant will have taken on the top job.
As yet, there has been no official word from Liverpool as to why Buvac departed the club, and in the absence of fact speculation has ranged from a falling-out with Klopp to personal issues to a desire to establish a reputation for himself as more than just Klopp’s assistant.
Fenerbahce are the second club Buvac has been linked with this summer, as shortly after the season ended he was briefly linked with the then-vacant position at Arsenal.
