Shaqiri set to join Liverpool ‘within days’

Xherdan Shaqiri’s move to Liverpool is imminent with negotiations between the club and Stoke City at an advanced stage, according to David Maddock of The Mirror.

It emerged on Wednesday that the Reds were closing in on the Swiss international, having triggered a modest release clause of around £13.5 million which became active when Stoke were relegated from the Premier League.

It now seems that the move could be finalised this weekend, with Shaqiri set to become Liverpool’s second signing of the summer after they swooped for Monaco’s Fabinho.

Italian side Lazio have reportedly joined the race at the eleventh hour and submitted a counter-offer, but it looks to be too little too late.

The player openly expressed a desire to remain in the top tier of English football and it is understood that a move to Anfield is his preference.

The deal could see Harry Wilson, pursued by around a dozen Championship sides, or Sheyi Ojo go the other way on loan.

The charismatic Shaqiri, who can play on either flank, is being signed to significantly bolster Liverpool’s attacking depth.

The Reds may turn their attention to an attacking midfielder, their supposed priority this summer, once this deal is wrapped up.
