Liverpool want to tie down Grujic before loan move

Liverpool are looking to extend Marko Grujic’s contract before they send the Serbian out on loan, leading suitor Neil Warnock says.

Grujic still has two years remaining on his current deal, but an extension would underline that he remains a part of the club’s long-term plans.

After he puts pen to paper, Liverpool will sanction a temporary switch to a Premier League side, with Cardiff at the front of the queue ahead of Crystal Palace.

Grujic spent the latter half of the 2017/18 season with the Bluebirds and would likely be allotted plenty of game-time if he returned to South Wales.

Cardiff boss Warnock says he has held talks with the midfielder and expects a decision to be reached very soon.

“I spoke to Marko yesterday, we are still optimistic, but we should know in the next few days,” he said.

“If he’s not staying there I think he will come to us, it all depends on the negotiations.

“There is a contract involved, but it will be resolved, I’m sure they will make a decision shortly.”

Grujic’s prospects of first-team football took a significant hit after the club recruited Fabinho and Naby Keita, but the Reds want to keep him on their books and know regular minutes in the top flight will be a good test of his credentials.
