Liverpool interested in delayed Christian Pulisic deal?

Following Borussia Dortmund’s U.S. tour that saw them face Liverpool during the International Champions Cup, it came to light that the German side may be ready to cash-out on young winger Christian Pulisic.

The 19-year-old, already believed by many to be the best American player in the world, figures to fetch Dortmund a handsome transfer fee if he is put up for sale.

There have been murmurs surrounding a potential Pulisic move to England over the last few years, with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool being the club most often linked with a swoop for the player.

Klopp signed Pulisic as a 16-year-old while he was in charge at Dortmund back in 2015, so the LFC boss and the American already have a history together. However, Pulisic’s debut with the first team came after Klopp had already left Germany for Liverpool.

Several reports indicate that Klopp would like to bring the American to Anfield. Doing so would increase the club’s profile with a burgeoning American fanbase, and it doesn’t hurt that Liverpool’s owners also happen to also be American.

However, the club have been incredibly active in the transfer window already this summer. The big-money signings of Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri have most believing that the Reds are done splashing the cash during this transfer window.

Sometimes it can be a challenge to find the right betting site, but the odds say it’s looking increasingly likely that Pulisic will stay in Germany for at least another year. The teenager is currently listed at 4-6 to stay with Dortmund at the closure of the transfer window.

Fenway Sports Group has been helpful in helping Klopp build the team he wants thus far. The club has been excellent about identifying talent since Klopp joined in 2015, which has previous underwhelming big-money failures like Christian Benteke looking like a distant memory.

That said, there is a decent chance Klopp has spent all available funds this summer. Barring potential additional sales prior to the closure of the current window (Simon Mignolet? Loris Karius?), it looks like Liverpool are pretty set heading into the upcoming campaign.

While that is likely to be the case, reports out of Germany on Thursday indicate that Klopp and co. may not be done quite yet. The Reds are keen to add Pulisic to the fold at some point. With his contract with Dortmund set to expire in the summer of 2020, the writing seems to be on the wall with regards to his future with the club.

Similar to what they did last summer by securing Naby Keita’s rights from RB Leipzig a year ahead of time, the new reports suggest that the Reds would like to sign Pulisic now and have him join the club in an official capacity at the end of next season. Keita played all of last season in Germany before joining Liverpool this summer.

If true, this looks like a move that should please all parties. Klopp gets the player he wants; the player gets the move he wants and the selling team gets a sizable fee in order to facilitate the deal. One potential sticking point is the price tag. Dortmund reportedly value Pulisic as a €70 million asset, so he won’t come cheap. Still, 19-year-old phenoms such as this don’t come around all that often. Pulisic already has vast experience at the senior level not often seen in others his age.

Liverpool have no shortage of talent in attack as it stands, but this would obviously be a move made with an eye on the future. It also can’t hurt from a marketing perspective. Liverpool are already hugely popular in the United States, so you can imagine Pulisic LFC shirts will come flying off the racks if this move winds up going down.

Take the rumor for what it’s worth, of course. Football rumors have a way of emerging one day and being debunked the next, especially around this time of year. Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich each reportedly have their eyes on Pulisic, as well.
