Firmino feared going blind after eye injury last month

Roberto Firmino has revealed that he genuinely feared he would go blind in one eye after his injury during Liverpool’s match with Tottenham last month.

Jan Vertonghen unintentionally poked his finger into Firmino’s left eye as the pair challenged for the ball, forcing the Brazilian to leave the field. Firmino was takekn straight to hospital but was discharged fairly quickly with no permanent damage sustained.

The Reds’ Number 9 scored the winner against Paris Saint-Germain last month but was unable to find the net against Napoli last night.

“I was scared of going blind in one eye and not being able to see again,” Firmino admitted recently. “Thank God nothing like that happened and it gradually improved day after day.

“Of course, I’ve been taking my medication and looking after it. Your eyes are very important as a professional footballer. Thank God everything is OK now.”

The striker, who has become a core member of Jurgen Klopp’s attacking setup, says “everything was blurry” when he left the pitch at Wembley.

“I was frightened, but the pain gradually passed after the doctor gave me a painkiller and it got better,” said Firmino. “When the incident happened, everything was blurry and I couldn’t see out of my left eye.

“It’s much better. The pain has gone and I can’t feel anything anymore. It’s still a bit red, but I hope that clears up over time.”

Firmino will hope to lead Liverpool to victory against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League.
