Klopp Talk: “The Only Problem Is We Didn’t Finish”

Thank goodness for Daniel Sturridge.

If you’d said before the season started that Daniel Sturridge would look key to Liverpool’s title aspirations two months in, most wouldn’t have believed you. The striker, though, is enjoying something of a career resurgence at Liverpool.

He might have lost a step, but he still has attacking talent in excess and is finally showing signs that he just might be able to stay fit, he’s become the club’s key second striker and a worthy alternative to the tenacious Roberto Firmino.

“The timing is perfect,” noted manager Jürgen Klopp following his late goal earned the Reds a point against Chelsea on Saturday. “We need him desperately and he is fit—so fit. He is the fittest Daniel I have known. So it’s all good.”

Of course, it wasn’t just Sturridge, whose late wonder-strike salvaged a point for Klopp’s side after a long and sometimes frustrating match that Liverpool really deserved something from but looked destined not to get anything.

After edging Chelsea by the numbers at home mid-week only to lose to the brilliance of Eden Hazard, on the road on the weekend they were playing them level but looking like they’d again lose to the brilliance of Eden Hazard.

That, at least for Liverpool fans, made for a very frustrating afternoon—and a very frustrating week. But the fact Liverpool played as well as they did was still something Klopp wanted to highlight following the match.

“The boys played a fantastic game,” he added. “To work hard and be lively in the highest energy in all these defending moments, and then when you have the ball to play around, create gaps, play through the lines. That’s great.

“The only problem is we didn’t finish. But that’s all and we will finish again, there’s no doubt about that. We are a good football team and I’m really happy we proved that again.
