Liverpool’s September Player of the Month

There are eight finalists for player of the month this month. All eight have a solid case. Cast your vote.

After Liverpool Offside readers named Virgil van Dijk the team’s player of the month for August, it’s time to select September’s winner after a busy—and mostly very, very good—month of football for Jürgen Klopp’s Reds.

And befitting such a busy, high-quality month of football, the leader list based on Man of the Match voting—with five points given for finishing first through to one for finishing fifth—is appropriately difficult to sort through.

Three players ended up with ten points, but all got there very differently. Virgil van Dijk was once again strong throughout and racked up ten points with a series of solid performances but no Man of the Match honours.

Daniel Sturridge also earned ten points—but nine of those came in the final two games of the month against his old side Chelsea, including being boted Man of the Match for his late and brief appearance off the bench on Saturday.

Then there’s Xherdan Shaqiri, who won Man of the Match twice—against Southampton in the league and then in the mid-week Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea—but outside of that failed to crack the top five in voting.

Right behind them are Andrew Robertson, who made the top five more than any other player in September, plus Joe Gomez and Gini Wijnaldum—both of whom earned Man of the Match once. All earned nine points overall.

As if that weren’t enough, James Milner and Roberto Firmino earned eight points apiece—and, honestly, it’s hard to look at all that and pick a genuine favourite. All eight finalists have a case. All eight of them could win.

It’s up to you to determine which one of them does. And if you’re visiting on Google AMP or Apple News and want to vote, you can reload this story from the front page of the site in order to enable the poll.
