Liverpool Reportedly Set to Allow Alberto Moreno to Leave on Free Transfer

There has been no move by the club to negotiate a new deal for the left back.

Liverpool have made no move to begin negotiations on a new deal for Alberto Moreno, whose current contract expires in the summer of 2019, and the club fully expect the 26-year-old Spanish left back to depart the club on a free transfer.

This according Neil Jones, with the club-connected journalist further claiming that, as things currently stand, Liverpool intend to give academy left back Adam Lewis a chance to earn the role of Andy Robertson’s backup for next season.

Lewis, an 18-year-old academy player born in Liverpool, has reportedly impressed since making the step up to the U23s—and he played well enough with Steven Gerrard’s U18 for the Rangers manager to try to bring him to Scotland last summer.

Given his age, Liverpool preferred to keep him at the club with the U23s for the 2018-19 season, and while a lot can change between now and next summer, for the time being it looks like he won’t be heading anywhere next year, either.

As for Moreno, the club are not expected to explore the possibility of a January sale and are happy to have him on hand to provide depth for the remainder of the season while Lewis continues to play regularly and develop with the U23s.

As of January 1st, Moreno will be free to agree a pre-contract with any side outside of the Premier League, and there have been early reports of interest from a handful of La Liga sides—including Barcelona.
